Wing Style Sofas & Chairs (Re-upholstery, Repair & Restoration)
Wing style furniture is often associated with the fireside chair. But in fact any piece of seated furniture that has wings rising from the arms and joining the back is classified as a wing style.
Wing chairs also referred to as a wing-backs, have been around since the early 1700’s. They are still as popular today. Wing-backs are usually fully upholstered in fabric or leather, the original purpose of these wings was to protect those seated in the chairs from drafts commonly found in old, poorly insulated houses. Other uses are to protect the sitter from the heat of a roaring fire and also the unique nature of the wings can help to keep heat contained within the chair.
The Queen Anne Fireside Chair is probably the most common of all the wing chairs, and originated toward the end of the 18th century. The Queen Anne along with the French Wing-back were made a bit smaller than the rest, and were typically intended to be chairs for the ladies.
More modern wing styles can also be found on sofas and conservatory furniture, where the wings are just barley noticeable. The tub chair is an example of a modern wing chair.
