Sofa beds, also known as Sleepers, Convertible Furniture and Hide-a-beds, can come in a whole range of different styles and sizes to suite any décor. From a large grand 3 seater sofa in your living room to a single chair in a study, sofa beds allow for a more efficient use of space that is particularly helpful in small apartments and dorm rooms.
The purpose of a sofa bed is to serve seating and sleeping needs but unlike it’s arguable ancestors, the daybed and antique drop arm sofa, a sofa bed can be used as both fully functioning bed and sofa. The first patent of a mechanical sofa bed was filled by Louis Kragen of San Fransisco, California. On the 25th November 1901, where the bed was hidden within the confinds of the sofa.
There are several designs used in the way sofa beds work from the mechanical pull-out to the fold-down, otherwise known as click clack.
The most popular design is the the mechanical pull-out. The bed’s frame is folded into the base of the couch and hidden underneath the seat cushions. When the bed is pulled out, legs extend from the bottom of the frame to support the end of the mattress. The back and arms of the couch form a headboard for the bed.
Another type of sofa-bed is a simple fold-down design that is similar to a futon, which became popular in the 1990's and is reportedly originated from Japan. In the fold-down style, there is a special type of hinging mechanism that allows the back (or even arms) of the sofa to drop back, forming a flat surface with the seat cushion.
The pull-out sleeper looks like any other sofa, and can be purchased in a variety of design styles including modern, traditional, country and contemporary. While the modular design of the fold-down sofa bed looks best with modern or retro home designs.
