Reclining Sofas & Chairs (Re-upholstery, Repair & Restoration)

The earliest recliners date back as far as the 1800’s, in fact Napoleon lll reportedly possessed a reclining camp day bed that featured padded arm rests and a steel frame. A person could sit in upright, recline with the feet elevated or could be folded out for sleeping.

A number of reclining designs came after this, some with motion, some without. But it wasn’t until the 1920s, when two American cousins, Knabush and Shoemaker patented a wooden design that the recliner stared to become a staple in people homes rather than conversation pieces. The patent led to the founding of the La-Z-Boy Company.

Modern recliners initially used a mechanism that tilted the back of the chair but in 1947 the Barcalounger Company added the built-in footrest, which La-Z-Boy only added four years later.

The recliner came to the UK in the 1960’s when furniture manufacturers like Parker Knoll started producing this “new” combination of the conventional easy chair, footstool and chaise longue. The Parker Knoll Norton Recliner is still one of Parker Knolls top selling chairs.

Recliners today can be found in a number of designs to match modern décor, such as the club, modern and wing-back styles. There are also recliners, like the “riser recliner”, that are useful for medical conditions such as limited mobility or back problems.
