You’d be forgiven in assuming that dining chairs have been around since people were eating in dining rooms but that is not necessarily the case.

In the Middle Ages, upper class Britons and other European nobility in castles or large manor houses mainly dined in a Great Hall. The family would sit at the head table on a raised dais; everybody else would sit on trestle tables with benches at a right angle away from them.

So dining chairs weren’t initially chairs but benches. It wasn’t until these households started eating in smaller intimate gatherings, thought to be due as much to political and social changes as to the greater comfort that the tables and chair we know today were adopted.

In many cultures around the world, a customary place and time for families to gather is for a meal, in some, a meal lasting over 4-5 hours is not uncommon. That is why it is essential not only to have a sturdy dining table but also good quality and comfortable dining room chairs

Dining Chair classically change along with movements in home décor, so in the last few centuries there have been a mass of different styles and designs. Many have made re-occurrences recently giving the consumer a vast array of choice to suite any need.

Dining room chairs are typically made up of sturdier and more expensive materials when compared to kitchen, bar and bistro chairs. They have higher backs, wider seats and more substantial or ornate legs. Traditionally chair arrangements feature armchairs at the head and foot of the table and four or more side chairs flanking them.
