Step 1 – Before. This sofa was an old chesterfield in very poor condition. With horse hair stuffing this might be 50 – 80 years old.

Step 2 – Showing the hand stitched horsehair filled arm section.

Step 3 – The stripped sown frame has now had the spring taken and sewn back in. The back area has been completely restored the original way as it would have been done when it was first built.

Step 4 – Done in the original way, the spring on the seat section is hand stitched in. The bamboo cane equals the weight when the sofa is sat on and gives a firm straight edge for the upholsterer to work to.

Step 5 – The seat has now been webbed ready to accept the springs. Next step is to build up the stuffing. He makes a diamond grid to show where the buttons will go. Using the grid ensures equal buttons on the finished upholstered sofa. The white dacron is applied on all surfaces.

Step 6 – Very strong webbing is used to brace the buttons which are pulled very tight to ensure no movement.

Step 7 – This shows right inside the newly restored sofa. All the springs are lashed securely in position

Step 8 – With the seat and back complete, the next stage is the outside. Here showing the outside of the arm. The holes on the woodwork show where the previous fabrics were attached. The pleats round the scroll of the arm have been hand tacked into position for strength and even spacing.

Step 9 – Showing the complexity of work that has gone into the diamond effect deep buttoning.

Step 10 – Showing the finished article back in the customer’s home. A much loved family heirloom restored to it’s former glory.

Button Back Chesterfield

Button back sofas provide a great challenge for our team of reupholsters. Plumbs have such high standards on the finish of furniture that it will often look like the buttons were never removed and replaced at all.

I would like to say how very pleased I am with the re-upholstery of my suite. It is far better than the original. I wish to thank everyone concerned, I cannot praise the workmanship enough.
