Step 1 – Cushions removed, and ready for the reupholsterer to start work

Step 2 – The sofa is now 99% stripped down. All the old fabric has been removed and the old stuffings and springs as they were worn and perished

Step 3 – The sash cramp is holding a repair to the frame – the clamp is holding both arms to the frame. The sample of fabric is checked on the actual piece of furniture. The reupholsterer has started to apply Dacron to the base foam. Dacron gives foam longer life, is fire retardent nd most importantly helps the reupholsterer move the cloth while he is working on the job to help ensure a perfect finish

Step 4 – The seat is now reupholstered, and the back foam has been removed. The fabric laid on the arm is ready to be reupholstered

Step 5 – The arm is now largely complete. The loose fabric at the back of the arm will pass through the back of the chair

Step 6 – Using scissors to cut into the back corner of the seat to complete the second arm

Step 7 – With both arms now complete, the reupholsterer is ready to start studding around the trim or facing of the wood

Step 8 – Next stage is buttoning the back. First step is preparation

Step 9 – Putting in the first button on the chair back in the centre. This helps ensure the cloth fits and gives an even finish. He has pushed the needle in from the front with button attached, and is now pulling the needle through from the back of the chair

Step 10 – The first line of buttons are in, and he is starting to work on the next line above. The line above that is already tacked in place to form the pleats to the frame

Step 11 – All the buttons are finally in place. The deep buttoning process is very time consuming and skilled. The last stage to complete the back is trimming off the excess before studding

Step 12 – The sofa back is finally complete after many hours painstaking effort. The next step is the outsides of the furniture.

Step 13 – The outside is finished with studding detailed. Studding is again a time consuming process
