Upstyling your home

Bring your home up to date without breaking the bank. The hot new trend is not to buy in but rather to chuck out

Keeping your house endlessly chic is not as hard as you might think. According to interiors expert Rachel Meddowes, the new direction is for honesty and simplicity.

“Updating your home is all about keeping things simple,” says Rachel, interiors writer for Harper’s Bazaar, with clients that include Chanel, Claridge’s and Estée Lauder. “Get rid of the clutter and keep the things that you truly love: keep that lovely comfy sofa that you enjoy sitting on; keep the one beautiful picture you love looking at,” she adds.

Pastiche Slub Before Pastiche Slub After

One of the benefits of this philosophy is that decluttering will create much much-needed extra space in your home. But it also suggests that an element of idiosyncrasy has come back into favour in the world of home interiors. It is important to show that you are not a slave to fashion, that you have a personality and a creative sense of your own.

“Era-mixing is very on trend,” says Rachel. “Put that 18th-century chair next to the modern Swedish one your best friend gave you a couple of years ago. If you love all the pieces in your home, it’s easy to get them to work together. The phrase “classic” nowadays means having a structure that’s interesting. Within that structure you can put all sorts of interesting things.”

This new “pared-down eclectic” imperative is great news for people without huge budgets. And it’s refreshing to hear high-end designers telling us that we need to think more in terms of creating a home as opposed to a cold “interior”. It’s a bit like the way the French dress. Rather than having hundreds of cheap T-shirts in your wardrobe, why not collect five or six beautiful outfits that you can get repaired when needs be?

The fashion industry is becoming increasingly fascinated by the new interiors direction of making things your own. The idea of objects and items of furniture containing worth because of the love and passion that went into their creation (as opposed to an object being adored because it is made of diamonds or gold) is gaining in popularity.

Remember, too, that comfort is nothing to be ashamed of in the new world of “pared-down eclectic” decor. By all means, keep that well-made, much-loved couch or arm chair but re-cover it in a fabric that moves you – this, of course, is where Plumbs can help, with a wide range of 800 fabrics.

Other small changes to your home will go a long way: freshen up your bedroom with some new cushions and a fabulous bedspread – Plumbs has a new range of these to explore. Alternatively, put some new door handles and drawer pulls in your kitchen or spend a little money on new lighting to bring out different areas of a room. Start with new floor lamps – or if you’re feeling more adventurous, experiment with new ceiling fixtures.

And, if nothing else, just do a deep clean. A clearer, cleaner home will improve your mood, make your home more enjoyable to live in, and chances you’ll be inspired to make some more adventurous changes.

How Plumbs Can Save Your Sad Sofa

It’s a shame that this is an all too common sight in the UK; an abandoned sofa, thrown out onto the street to make way for a brand new suite.  But when you consider the amount of time spent finding the right size furniture for your home, or the great memories your sofa has been the foundation of, it can seem like a real shame to just discard it.

With this in mind, Plumbs would like to change the public’s perception of old and tatty sofas and help them to see the potential in the furniture they already own!

Take this sofa which could easily have seen a fate like this.  Luckily however we were able to purchase this and give it a brand new lease of life.

Abandoned Sofa

We striped back the old worn fabric; tightened the joints and made a few repairs to the frame before replacing the seat cushions and padding.  The feet were in good condition so we decided to keep these as they are, along with the scroll detail on the arm.

The ‘Chatsworth Rose’ fabric we choose is much fresher than the brown fabric that previously covered it.  This fabric has a delicate floral design in a subtle Duck Egg tone, a colour that works really well against the dark feet.

In the image above we co-ordinated this look with a mini dot fabric called ‘Chatsworth Trellis’ and pale Pink and Gold scatter cushions. Fresh flowers also give the room a more vibrant feel.

This amazing transformation is just one of hundreds we carry out each week which is why we feel it’s such a shame to see a perfectly good sofa (just in need of a little TLC) thrown out! What do you think – are you a fan of our transformation?

This could be your old and tatty sofa too – no need to put it into landfill just yet. If you’d like to speak to one of our expert Home Consultants about transforming the furniture in your home, why not contact us today.

Hidden Gems – Could You Be Sitting On A Real Treasure?

Before you throw away that tatty old chair in the corner of the sitting room, take a closer look. Some pieces of furniture aren’t quite what they seem and you may have been sitting on a hidden gem that just needed a little TLC, as these examples show.

Use your imagination

If you are looking for valuable furniture in your home, try and assess its structural merits and imagine what it would look like with new coverings.

A wonderful way of exposing the original attributes of your chair and bringing it back to glory is to give it a tasteful makeover. With some clever use of fabric, you can revive an antique piece of furniture so that all of its best features are enhanced.

Keep any exposed parts of wooden furniture well-polished – beeswax is best. Ensure that the new covers are well-treated and regularly cleaned and then you can simply enjoy sitting on a comfortable and attractive piece of furniture!
